Why we need your BVN
Handing over your BVN can feel like a big ask — so let’s be completely clear about what it is, why Transa needs it, and, just as importantly, what it does not allow anyone to do. No jargon, no fine print.
What a BVN actually is
Your Bank Verification Number is an 11-digit number issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria (through NIBSS). Think of it as a single, national ID for banking: it ties you — your name, date of birth, and biometrics — to one identity across every bank you use.
Crucially, a BVN is an identifier, not a password. It’s not your account number, your PIN, or your online-banking login. On its own it can’t unlock or move anything.
Why Transa asks for it
Every licensed financial service in Nigeria is required to verify who its customers are — this is called KYC (“Know Your Customer”), and it’s mandated by the CBN. Your BVN is how we confirm you are really you. Specifically, it lets us:
- Verify your identity — matching your details so no one can impersonate you or open an account in your name.
- Keep the platform safe — BVN verification is one of the strongest tools against fraud, money laundering, and stolen-identity accounts.
- Unlock full access — verified accounts can transact at higher limits, send money, and use features that regulations reserve for confirmed identities.
What your BVN does not do
This is the part people worry about most, so let’s say it plainly:
- ❌ It does not give Transa — or anyone — access to your bank accounts.
- ❌ It cannot be used to withdraw, transfer, or touch your money in any bank.
- ❌ It is not your bank password or PIN, and it can’t reset them.
A BVN proves who you are. It does not hand over control of your money — that stays with you and your bank.
What we actually retrieve — and what we don’t
When you enter your BVN, we check it against the official CBN/NIBSS database through a licensed verification partner. What comes back is limited to identity details — your registered name, date of birth, and phone number — which we match to the information you provided. We use it to confirm, not to snoop: we don’t see your account balances, transactions, or statements, and we never receive your banking credentials.
How we protect it
- Encrypted in transit and at rest.
- Used only for verification — never sold, rented, or shared for marketing.
- Handled under the NDPR (Nigeria Data Protection Regulation), which gives you the right to access, correct, or request deletion of your data.
Asking for your BVN isn’t about surveillance — it’s the standard, regulated way to make sure the person opening a Transa account is really you, and to keep everyone on the platform safe. If you ever have questions about your data, our team is one message away.
